Pipe relining is a trenchless repair option for suitable pipe sections where access, shape and structural condition allow it. Excavation provides direct access and may be preferred where the pipe has collapsed, moved significantly, requires regrading, has unsuitable connections or cannot be reliably repaired from inside.
Start with diagnosis, not a preferred repair method
A recurring blockage alone does not prove the pipe needs relining or excavation. The line should be cleared enough to inspect, then the defect, location and surrounding access should be understood. CCTV drain inspection is often useful evidence before major drain repair.
When pipe relining may be suitable
Relining can be useful when a pipe has a localised defect or damaged section that can be prepared and lined from access points without opening the full surface above it. Suitability depends on pipe diameter, bends, junctions, deformation, cleanliness and the condition of the host pipe.
When excavation may be the better option
Excavation may be required when the pipe has collapsed, shifted, lost grade, has extensive deformation, needs a new alignment or cannot be accessed and prepared for lining. Direct access also allows damaged fittings, junctions or surrounding ground conditions to be dealt with physically.
Access and surface disruption
Relining can reduce surface disruption in suitable situations, which may matter under landscaping, driveways or finished areas. Excavation creates a work zone but gives direct visual access to the pipe and can solve problems that an internal liner cannot.
Questions to ask before approving major drain repair
- What defect was found and where is it?
- Was the line cleared and inspected with CCTV?
- Is the pipe structurally suitable for relining?
- Are there junctions, bends or grade issues that change the repair?
- What surfaces or landscaping would excavation affect?
- What does the proposed repair solve that simpler maintenance would not?
