What stormwater drainage does
Stormwater systems manage rain falling on roofs and hard surfaces. Gutters, downpipes, pits, grates and underground lines move that water away from the building. Overflow during rain can result from a blockage, damaged pipe, poor outlet, capacity issue or another site-specific fault.
What sewer drainage does
Sewer or sanitary drainage carries wastewater from plumbing fixtures. Warning signs include toilets that gurgle, multiple fixtures draining slowly, sewage odours and overflow points activating when water is used inside the property.
Why the difference matters
The correct diagnostic path is different. A stormwater problem may require inspection of roof drainage, pits, surface levels and underground stormwater lines. A sewer blockage may need drain clearing, jet blasting and potentially CCTV inspection.
Three clues to note before calling
- Timing: only during rain, only during fixture use, or all the time?
- Location: roof edge, surface grate, toilet, floor waste or outdoor relief point?
- Pattern: one fixture, several fixtures, one section of the yard or multiple drainage points?
Can stormwater and sewer problems happen at the same time?
Yes. Heavy rain can expose separate weaknesses around the property, and a customer may notice more than one water issue at once. Do not assume every wet area comes from the same source. Separating rainfall-related symptoms from plumbing-use symptoms is often the fastest way to narrow the investigation.
